The idea of a world database for the most relevant volcanic caves was first presented during the XI International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology, held in Pico Island, Azores, Portugal, in May 2004. At that time, was also suggested GESPEA (Azorean volcanic caves study group) as the task force to accomplish the project. Therefore, in Tepotzlan, Mexico, at the XII Symposium, GESPEA group presented the concept and main principles for the WoMOVoC – World Most Outstanding Volcanic Caves database.
Two years later, in September 2008, attending the XIII International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology, in Jeju Island - Korea, GESPEA group announced this website and presented the online database for the World Most Outstanding Volcanic Caves.
During this symposium, the official meeting of the Commission on Volcanic Caves of the UIS – Union Internationale de Spéléologie designated for the WoMOVoC Scientific Board the following members:

Now it is up to worldwide cavers to share the result of their work by feeding the WoMOVoC database.
